Hi guys. And welcome to another edition of Zupo's SEO Talk & Tea.
Today's conversation, a large social following does not always translate to SEO. The reason why this is important because marketing is becoming bigger and bigger. Social media is becoming bigger. SEO is becoming bigger. Paid advertising is becoming bigger. And while all people think this is all one mass marketing kind of blend, but what you often find is that being good at different arenas doesn't mean you're always good at the other.
So, before we begin, though, I want to introduce the tea we had today. Today we have a Pu'Er Tea, this is probably now becoming one of the most recurring guests on the show. And I do that on purpose because I drink this tea the most. So, I think it warrants being on the show the most. And as you can see, I'm running low on it actually, but this Pu'Er Tea again is a fermented tea, very strong tea, when it's brewed, has a very dark liquid kind of a color. And therefore to me, it is the closest thing you can get to black tea. It does not taste like black tea, but it has that kick and strength of a black tea. Well, let's go ahead and get brewing, get talking.
A little bit here ... So, the reason why this is so important, because when we're doing marketing for SEO purposes, when we're doing SEO, we're trying to do like content, links and referring domains and trying to work with sites to drive the stronger foreign domains that links to our website. Now, the reason why this is important is because oftentimes if you're doing a B2B service or a B2C service, you often need to work with the community. And there are always influencers and thought leaders, no matter the industry. And what we have found is that when we're working with our clients, oftentimes they'll want to work with different influencers or different social channels, maybe a YouTube channel, Instagram influencer, and they want to work with them in order to help their SEO. And so my team will be tasked with finding the right players to work with and reaching out to them. That's kind of the normal thing.
But what I want to impart is what we have found is that generally we don't find strong correlations between a YouTube channel, with a huge subscriber following, or an Instagram with a huge following. And that influencer having a strong website with SEO, oftentimes it's the exact opposite we find. Where we find people with weak YouTube channels have really strong websites and so on, so forth. So, what does that mean, is that if you are going out there and you're trying to work with Instagram influencers or other people with large social followings, because they might have the subscriber count, everything, that doesn't always mean they have a strong SEO. I've seen many, many occasions where we have seen someone with so many YouTube subscribers, but then when we go to their website, the website looks like on an SEO level, looks like it was made yesterday. As like a (DR), domain rating of zero.
So, if you're doing outreach with social players and you're doing it because you want to drive your SEO up, you're wanting your rankings up, you have to be a little bit more meticulous that you have to be careful that just because they have a large social following, does not mean they have a strong SEO. Because working with someone who has a large social following, yes, the exposure is good. I'm not saying the exposure is not good. If you want to work with them because of their audience, please do so. But if you're trying to work with them to help your rankings, then that might not be the case because the domain rating of their site of where you would acquire is so low. On top of that, if you're working with things like Instagram or YouTube, remember that links driven from YouTube and Instagram are automatically no-follow. No-follow links have no link of value.
They automatically wipe them out to zero equity for your website and in the terms of link building. So, when you're finding occasions, if again, there is merit, and if you're a social influence, everything, there is merits of working with that because they have a wider audience. And then you can go for the talk with their audience and get exposure. But if you're reaching out for purely SEO purposes, large social followings don't translate always to large SEO strength on the website. Therefore, it is important when you're doing scoping and you're looking for opportunities to work with different influencers and thought leaders. Don't just look at their social channels, look at their website and try to shortlist those that have a strong SEO profile on their website because those will truly help your SEO. So, this is very important as at you're scoping out and going into these different campaigns, just because someone has a large following, you'll often find a lot of teams will be like, "Yeah, yeah, large followers. Add it to the list."
And then you'll do all this work. You'll send a free product, free service, or whatever it might be. And then monthly you'll figure out the link coming in is super weak. Right? You want to make sure the effort you're putting in, especially if you're doing for SEO purposes, warrants the time and resources it will take to get that link. So, hopefully that will help you in your own scoping. If you guys doing your own campaigns, make sure you're using tools like Moz or HS, to identify if the sites are strong enough. And if not, maybe you want to move them just off the list, or find other opportunities. But if you've got ... Hopefully that's valuable to you guys. If you found it valuable, please like and subscribe. I'm going to go ahead and pour out my tea and hope to see you guys again soon.
Thanks everybody. Ooh, it's hot.
