Hi guys, and welcome to another edition of Zupo's SEO Talk & Tea.

Today's conversation is, is there any value in buying URLs? I think this is an important question because a lot of people still get prompted if you want to buy this URL or domain. I'm selling it or, hey, this business we're buying, they have 10 URLs. We could buy those. That's an important question that gets brought up a lot so I think it's worth discussing in today's video.

Before we begin to, I do want to introduce the tea we have today. It is a Jasmine green tea. Jasmine green tea, it tends to be one of my more favorite teas when I want something more dessert like. It's very common in Boba drinks. If you ever got Jasmine green milk tea, this is the base line. This is the Jasmine tea. Jasmine tea and green tea, I used to work at a Boba shop and I never used to know the difference. Now I know. Green tea is generally the umbrella. Jasmine green tea is a section of that umbrella or it's a special, unique part of green tea. Jasmine tea just has this very unique scent and flavor. You can smell when it's a Jasmine green tea from far away. It's more aroma-based than a normal green tea.

But let's go ahead and get brewing. I'm excited to have some green tea, actually. Let's get talking about, is there any value in buying URLs? Like I was saying at the beginning of the video, a lot of people still value the good URL. I think a part of it is also just because there is some magic or belief that maybe buying the right URL will lead to the right sale. For example, I heard a story about someone buying disney.com a long time ago and Disneyland, or Disney the company, had to buy it from them. Think there's that aspect too and that's beyond SEO.

What I'm specifically talking about is there are some people who believe that if you buy a bunch of URLs and you have them, that'll help your SEO. Now let me talk about the gradient because, like with everything, there's not really one straightforward answer. I would say about only a 5 to 10% of the time, will you actually have buying URLs benefit your SEO? Let me be specific about that. So when you're buying URLs, let's say you're just buying 10 variations of the URL, then you're just redirecting it all to your website. Some people may believe that that is helpful to SEO but where it really comes down to is the assets of that URL.

So for example, if you bought 10 versions of a URL... Let me give you the example. Let's say you bought your main domain as pizza.com and then you bought pizzapie.com, you also bought pizza.co, pizza.ai, and you just have all these variations. Where the value would be is if those URLs and domains you have bought already have preexisting referring domains and link building coming into it. A good example is if these URLs used to be owned by different companies, but they've closed down or they don't use that URL anymore and you bought it, but there's still lots of links from referring domains coming into that URL. If you redirect that URL into your website, then there is value. Let's say you bought 10 URLs, like the exact ones I was saying, but no one has ever used them before or no one ever did any link building referring domains. They're essentially zeroed out across the board. There's actually no value in the sense that even if you redirect them, you're redirecting URLs that have zero value.

So, yes, it's cool to have 10 URLs redirecting to your site. It really, truly only matters when you have 10 URLs that have any value. It's almost essentially the same thing as link building. Link building matters much more about the quality of the link, much more so than the quantity at times. This is the same thing with URLs on domains. If you're buying a bunch of domains and someone's offering it to you, go look at the back end of it. Is their backlinks referring them? Does it point to them? If not, then you can essentially zero them out. There's no value. If they're trying to sell you a URL but it has 100 referring domains, 500 referring domains, then it can pike your interest a little bit more because then there might actually be a value because they've already done some preexisting groundwork.

When it comes to, is there a value in buying URLs? I would say 90% of the time, no. I have seen very, very rare occasions where people have been offered a URL. I looked at it and if there's any value to it, usually there's zero doubt or pretty close to zero. Only when the URLs have done preexisting work and that generally is a URL that used to have a site on it or still does but it's trying to sell that URL. That's when there actually is value. I would say only really heavily consider buying those URLs in an SEO sense, if there's been preexisting referring domains of back [inaudible 00:04:38] work done.

There are many other considerations, like I said, the buying and trading of URLs and all that kind of stuff. For the basis of this video, that's not what we're trying to focus on. We're trying to focus on SEO. I can tell you at SEO level, you just got to check those back links and referring domains. Hopefully, that will be helpful when you get offered URLs. I think everyone gets offered a URL every so often and it is worth checking the backend to see if you want to buy it. Generally, your answer will be on the back end. Look at how many links are referring to them and are coming in, and that will detail the value.

Hopefully that was valuable and that you can use that in your day to day when you're offered anything. If you found the video valuable, please like and subscribe. This Jasmine green tea is smelling so strong. I'm hyped for it. I'm going to go ahead and enjoy this Jasmine green tea and I hope to see you guys again soon. Thanks everybody.
