How to Measure Engineering Generative Engine Optimization Campaigns

By Jason Khoo

September 16, 2026

Engineering buyers don’t wait for a sales call to form an opinion. They research independently, and more of that research now runs through AI platforms. The 2026 State of Marketing to Engineers research found engineers spend 62% of the buying journey researching online, and generative AI platforms gained 8 points year over year as a routine research source. That shift changes what measurement has to capture.

Traditional SEO reporting tracks rankings, clicks, and sessions. Those metrics still matter, but they miss the moment an AI answer names three firms for a structural retrofit or a controls integration project and yours isn’t one of them. Clicks and referral traffic show what happened after an answer. They don’t show whether you were in it. That’s why engineering GEO measurement has to work at the prompt level, across repeated buyer and vendor-search prompts.

What Metrics Should Engineering Firms Use to Measure GEO?

The most important metrics engineering firms should track to measure GEO are AI visibility percentage and citation percentage.

AI Visibility Percentage

AI visibility percentage is the share of prompt checks where your firm appears in the answer. If you run 100 checks and your firm is named in 34, your visibility is 34%.

Measure across repeated tests, not single spot checks. Then break the number down by priority services and industries. A firm can be highly visible for water infrastructure design and nearly invisible for data center MEP. A blended average hides that.

Citation Percentage

Citation percentage is the share of answers that cite your website or content as a source. Treat it as a secondary indicator. A citation means the AI system retrieved and used your page. Brand inclusion means it named your firm as an option.

Brand inclusion and citation percentages don’t always move together. An answer can cite your seismic retrofit guide while recommending a competitor, or name your firm without linking to you. Track them separately.

Step 1: Define the Engineering Prompts You Want to Measure

Measurement starts where strategy starts: with prompts. Before optimizing anything, decide which questions you need to appear for. It works like keyword targeting, except the unit is a full buyer question.

Key Engineering Prompt Types

Build a stable set around four prompt types:

  • Vendor search: “Best geotechnical engineering firms for highway projects in Texas”
  • Market positioning: “Which engineering firms specialize in pharmaceutical cleanroom design?”
  • Brand accuracy: “What services does [Firm] offer?”
  • Sentiment: “Is [Firm] a good choice for industrial automation projects?”

Cover your engineering services, industries, technical capabilities, and applications. Keep the set stable. If prompts change every month, you can’t tell whether visibility moved or the test did.

Query Fan-Outs

For each priority prompt, map the query fan-outs. Google’s AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once before building its answer. A cleanroom vendor prompt might fan out into searches on ISO classification requirements, cleanroom HVAC design, and firm comparisons. Those fan-out searches tell you which pages your site needs, and which pages need to rank.

Step 2: Establish an Engineering AI Visibility Baseline

Run the same prompts repeatedly before you begin campaign work. Single runs aren’t reliable. SparkToro research found ChatGPT and Google’s AI produced an identical brand list in under 1% of repeated runs of the same prompt, while the frequency of a brand’s appearance across many runs proved more consistent.

Engineering AI Visibility Baseline Checklist

For the baseline, record:

  • Brand inclusion for each prompt
  • Citation presence and which URLs were cited
  • Which competing engineering firms appear, and how often
  • Starting visibility and citation percentages by service and industry

This benchmark measures every later report.

Step 3: Track Prompt-Level Movement

Aggregate numbers tell you whether things are improving. Prompt-level data tells you why. Sort prompts into improving, declining, and unchanged. Compare performance by service or industry. Look for prompts where competitors consistently appear more often. If a rival shows up in most bridge inspection prompts and you rarely do, that’s a specific gap with a specific set of fan-out searches behind it.

AI visibility tools like Peec AI make this manageable at scale. Peec defines visibility as the percentage of AI responses in which your brand appears, and its dashboard compares your visibility with top competitors and shows which domains AI platforms rely on for your prompts. This lets you track change over time instead of reconstructing it from screenshots.

Step 4: Monitor Citation Movement

Citations show which pages AI systems actually retrieve. Track which URLs get cited, for which prompts, on which platforms. Then compare that against your fan-out targets.

This is where measurement connects back to execution. If you built a page for a fan-out search and it isn’t being cited, check whether it ranks for that search. Creating the page isn’t enough. Pages that rank for fan-out queries are more likely to be retrieved, which is why the plan should include building links to those pages.

Step 5: Connect Engineering GEO Metrics to Business Outcomes

Visibility only matters if it supports the pipeline. Monitor identifiable AI referral traffic from platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot. Review assisted conversions where your analytics setup supports it. Compare visibility gains against branded search demand and lead activity over the same period.

Treat revenue attribution as directional, not exact. Brand familiarity shaped the most recent purchase decision for 53% of technical buyers [1], and much of that influence never shows up as a click.

Limitations of Measuring Engineering GEO

Be aware of these key limitations when measuring engineering GEO performance.

AI Visibility Is Not Fully Deterministic

Answers differ across AI platforms. Responses vary between runs of the same prompt. AI systems remain partially opaque, and none publish exactly how they select sources. Visibility percentage works because it measures frequency across many runs, not a fixed position.

Attribution Is Still Incomplete

Not every AI-influenced engineering buyer produces a trackable referral. AI Overviews traffic also can’t be separated from organic search in GA4 without Search Console and BigQuery. An engineer might read an AI answer, validate it in a trade publication, and type your URL a week later. Use multiple metrics instead of traffic alone.

Conclusion

Engineering GEO measurement works when it’s built on repeated prompt tracking. Prioritize AI visibility percentage, citation percentage, prompt-level movement, competitor visibility, and AI traffic. Read the trends, not individual answers, to understand whether visibility is improving across your priority engineering services and markets.
